Saturday Sewing

This weekend I went to a sew day hosted by http://quiltingclasses.blogspot.ca/ they are friends of mine and Karen does all of my quilting for the last year or so.

My goal that day was to get a baby quilt top done for a girlfriend that just had a baby girl Kira Jade.  To my surprise and amazement I got it all finished and handed it off to my quilter ;)

Yellow Brick Road

The fabric the I picked for this quilt was Minitures by Julie Henricks.  This is one of my fabric lines and I have awhole stash with a pattern to make.  When my girlfriend had told me it was a girl this was the line that I went to.  My stash is still fully intake (better get the quilt finished).

Today, I started cutting my fabric for the Mystery Quilt day on November 3 that they are hosting.  I am really excited about this to see what my quilt will turn out to be.

For a Friend

This year I made a gift for a dear friend and neighbour down the road. She is always there when you need her with out hesitation or whining. When hubby broke his ankle this fall she was there when needed either to drive Hubby somewhere or to watch Roy while I took Hubby.

So awhile back we were having a visit and she mentioned that she would like a green quilt one day… So I began to work on a quilt, well of course that did not work out in my favour just like the first try of everything…So I went back to the Quilt Shop – Traditional Pastimes.  I got some great information on how to cut the material to get the most out of it as it was just and I mean just enough to do the sashing for this quilt.  They suggested cutting crosswise – well I have never cut this before – WOW that was so easy to do for the sashing, will be keeping it in mind for next time I have to do sashing.  I like the quilt so much I might make myself another one but with other colours.

This quilt is made with Ty Pennington’s fabric http://typenningtonfabrics.com/the-fabric-2010.  I am very excited to see if my LQS shop gets in the new fabric.  It looks great and can’t wait to make something with it.

Thorn In My Side

I don’t think I have had so much trouble with a quilt once all the sections have been completed – minus Gone To Texas (which was my first ever attempt at ½ Square Triangles) – This was very easy with the piecing just very time consuming.  170 Shoo Fly’s countless HST – which now I can say I think I have mastered this.  You need them done, I have it down to a fine science.

Once I had all the sashing done for each section and then trying to put this on the Center WHAT A TASK that was…I put it all on and then there was this HUGE bubble in the centre for some unknown reason.  So I took it all apart yes, I got the seam ripper out and away I went.  Then I put it all back together, this time the Bubble was still there but not as bad, but still there.  I just did not want to have a bubble I worked so hard on this and bubble was not in the plans.  I folded up my top and put it away.  I was so ashamed and disappointed in myself that I could not get this figured out.  I was totally done with this quilt and actually ready to donate to somewhere, not too sure where but I would find out.

So I left this behind again, and went to work on some other projects that were on my UFO’s to see where I was etc.  Well I finally got all my blocks done for my Raggedy and Friends, just need to put the together.

So feeling good about my accomplishment with Raggedy and Friends I thought that I would tackle my Hickory Hills one more time.  All that I was thinking that if it does not work this time I am officially done with it and all the hard work down the drain.  So picked up the seam ripper again and back to taking it all off AGAIN!!!

LONG and BEHOLD!!! I finally got it done and the top border on and it looks GREAT but there is still a little bubble, but not near as bad as it was the other two times but it works…  I really can’t believe that I have finally finished this quilt top and now I just need to find a back piece and everything and get it quilted.

Just so excited.

Hickory Hills

Well I got the bug again, I just had to add the sashing around the center piece... Well it was very easy until I added it to the Center.... Well there is a bubble, I am not sure why or how to get it gone.  I am very upset with this bubble...

Top with the Bubble

The only thing that I can think of is taking the top of the quilt off and re-sewing it on again… But I don’t want to do that unless it will fix the situation.

Well here is what it looks like so far.  I just have to add the 4 ½” border to the quilt then it is done.  I am very happy that this will be done.  I am still not happy with the bubble so I probably will not get it quilted or anything unless I get the bubble fixed…

Well I am hoping that when I take this to my LQS that someone there will be able to help me...I worked so hard, it would be a shame not to finish.

Hickory Hills

I have found my mojo in the quilting world again...

So after doing my Coxcomb (see blog)- I decided that it is time to get my Hickory Hills done... I started this last year, I think it was October but not sure.  When I got the first month I did not do what I was suppose to use it for... I started to do the Jo Morton courthouse steps that was in a Quilting Magazine that I got...Then I started looking at the book and the pattern and decided OH I MUST DO THIS!!  By the time that I wanted to do this I had all the fabric with the exception of Month 1.  So I started cutting and piecing the shoofly's - the pattern says to press seems open so I did, wow does that take time...

I got a lot of the them done, (I think there is 171 shoofly's total for this quilt) but I was short imagine that... Of to my LQS to get month one...Well I got them all built - Positives and Negatives is the pattern for this - I have not clue how to do this but I managed to work my way through this.  Before I stop the last time I had them all is the strips that they were suppose to be in - or so I thought...

Yesterday I started doing the corner - 9 patch of shoofly's and the sides - 7 row of 3 - done for the day.  Today I started working on the center piece - Well I got it all pressed - THANK YOU FOR THE BEST PRESS I don't think that I will be able to live with out this.  Just after supper I thought ok 2 more rows and I am done the center YES - well NO I was not...

I look at the blocks and how they were, well for some reason it was not looking right... Well it took me ripping out 2 rows and 3 blocks to fix the error...  I guess that is what you get for trusting yourself for what you did 6 months ago or longer...

Any ways it is done, and now I have to figure out how to trim this... it is suppose to be 26 3/4 x 26 3/4 - center and 11 3/4 x 11 3/4 for the 9 patch (which it is not so I have to figure that out) and the sides are to be 11 3/4 x 26 3/4 well that will have to be adjusted as well...  I am not sure where I am going to go to get help with this as my pressing and 1/4 are not always the best that they can be, and my mat is not long enough it is only 24 so I have to go somewhere that has a big mat.  Hum, my LQS I think that they should be able to help me.

Here is what it looks like so far, I will post the finished top once I get that done - hope fully soon, really wanted it for show and tell at Club in 2 weeks.  Goal to have top done in 2 weeks.

My Fav. little Aussie Quilt Shop

Awhile ago I found this little shop called Hatched and Patched.  This was when I was looking for the Anni Downs book – Gardener’s Journal – for those wondering, I have not done anything other then have the fabric cut for this.  And I have signed up for emails etc.  Well I have become quite the little shopper over seas I must say.  My first purchase was a few little things, I had the greatest intentions to create these projects but as everything else, they are in the drawer of unfinished projects see (this post).  So a few months ago I got an email – in March/April I think that it was and I saw the cutest little sewing kit that I ever did see.  Seeing how it was close to my birthday I thought what the heck, lets get the full meal deal – the kit, the fabric everything, I did not want to go shopping for anything for this project, as I really wanted one so bad and this was oh so cute…

Well needless to say it is now the end of July and I still have not made this!!   I would really like to kick myself in the ass and hard.  I am hoping that I have this done for Christmas as a little treat to myself under the Christmas tree, something special that is handmade.  Please keep you fingers crossed that I actually get this done in plenty of time to get it under the tree!

Needing Help for a Block

OK all, I am looking for a block.  It is like the pinwheel but with rectangles.  I am not sure what this block is called but I am hoping that some one out there might know.  I have seen it in a quilt I think that they used to use this in the 30's but not sure.

If any one has a block that they can email me the dimensions that would be most excellent.

As Always,

Nine and Crossroads

I have done it!!! I have finished my quilt and all the fabric used where from my Gone to Texas leftovers... I never went into any other stash, I am so proud of my self.  And to top that off, I still have leftovers to be added to my stash...
I really can't believe how quickly that this quilt came together.  I am not sure if I am getting better with my seams - making sure that they are 1/4.  I can't believe the look of this quilt, on Friday I might go and see if I can find some backing for this.

I am done quilting for awhile as it does take so much time to do the cutting and piecing so I have to save my energy for Club and I would like to get started on my Stitcher for the Gardener's Journal.

Nine and Crossroads

Today, was a very cold and quite day for me.  My Hubby had Roy for most of the day and I was quilting.  So I have all my blocks cut and ready for piecing together to make my Crossroads and Nine patches.  I am so very proud of my self, I used all my leftover fabric from Gone to Texas.  I can't wait to see what this looks like when it is all pieced together.  This quilt is one that I really wanted to do when I finished Gone to Texas, I am glade that one more day (2 days) this should be all pieced together...It is not that big when done but I thought that I would see what I could make it look like.

Well my club starts in February, and I want to have this one done and Hickory Hills so that I can start my new quilt that the Club has chosen so I can just focus on this quilt and not think that I need to make any others.

I find myself straying from projects, I get something in my head and I just have to work on it until it is all completed, and sometimes that really does not work out well.

Keep tuned for a picture when this is done!!  Until then keep safe and warm

Hickory Hills - By Jo Morton

Well, last year - October, I saw the new book Coming Home by Jo and I fell in love with the Hickory Hill pattern that was in there....  While at club, Heather thought this would be a great quilt for club, so along with a few other gals, we started building this quilt...  Well I really did not think that I could do it just because of all the HST that it has - all shoflys 3.5 x 3.5 so they are small.  Well I decided that I was going to do this as I love Shoflys...  So I started on my adventure, well I had to stop because I was getting really addicted and focusing all my time on this and nothing else...When I decided to pick it back up I had a lot sewn, but not presses as it requires to press open...  So last night I decided I should figure out how many I have and how many more I need to make to get the top altogether...  Well it turned out that I had 50 light and 50 dark, and you need 85 of each... Well this morning I was off making 35 more of each to get the top done...  Well in the processes, my back went and I had to call my hubby in from feeding to get me up from the floor.... "I FALLEN AND I CAN'T GET UP" man did I feel old and I thought I should totally have one of those medical alert buttons, but I had my son who got me the phone... Well I spent the rest of the day on the couch and now I feel better....Well I have trimmed all HST and ready to get all the blocks done ready to put together...
Well also I would like to let you know that if you are getting quilting done by someone and not you... you should sew a little around the whole quilt so it does not stretch the HST and more there what has been done..Do you like how I wrapped them light are in the Light Blue and the dark are in the Dark Blue... I really can't wait for this to be done and quilt as this is I think going to be my fav......

Gone to Texas - FINALLY!!!!

I am so very pleased that I have FINISHED - yes FINISHED my Gone to Texas quilt.  It is not perfect by any means, and it is not worth anything if I were to sell it... My hubby asked that.  It was done first thing in the morning, well the strips and then I had to sew them together and all heck broke lose.  The sides weren't even, the bottom was off by a lot...  But I finished at 3 pm I got it all aligned but not that even, so I have decided that I am going to have make a bigger strip for binding... As I really can't cut any more....So here are some pictures of the finished quilt...

Well, I really can not express how gratefully I am for having this finally completed!!!  It has been a very long hard 8 months!!!  The next project I might just do little ones, and work on fine tuning specific areas of quilting - Applique, Hand Quilting.

Looking forward to class on February and start 2011 on little things.

Gone to Texas

I was just reminded that my club rejoins again on February 16th - Girls Gang - Traditional Pastimes - so you know that means... I have to finish "Gone to Texas" I really don't want to do this... But it has to get done...  So I have all the stripes together, but I just have to do the main one... Which is more tricky then all the others as my block are not equal and the such, but that is what you get for doing what I did....

Stay tuned for the progress of this quilt, oh I have the back for it, I got it at a blow out - $5/meter at 7.5 meters.... I was what I wanted and one of the shops were having a going out of business sale (well a change of owners) and this was in the sale bin!!!  So now I just need to get the quilt top done....

Quilting Update

OK
So you have all probably wonder what in the world has happened to my Sewing, Quilting etc.  Well, I have put it on the back burner until after Christmas as I got really frustrated with trying to quilt my tree skirt which is still only half done...

I am into Block Swaps and I currently caught up with just having to do January's which I have to figure out what I am going to make.

I have finally got all my floss for the 'Gardeners Jounal' quilt that I saw on a blog and had to get the book so that I can make this quilt.  I have copied all the embroidery pages to make them darker so that I can trace them onto my Muslin.  Now I just have to find time to do this and get going on that.  I have some of the fabric for the quilt once the stitchery is done.

I am also doing Raggedy and Friends and I have printed Block 5 and saved Block 6 (printer broken) so I have to get that traced and stitched as well.

So When Roy starts preschool again Jan 4 - I will have a couple of hours each day to do a little bit of quilting, stitchery and such.

I will keep you posted on the updates...  hopefully I will be able to get somethings done as I am sure missing my quilting.

December Block Swap

After being released from the hospital, I had to finish my regular and Christmas blocks for this month. Well these have been completed and dropped off in the mail. I have these going Airmail so hopefully these will be there sooner than later or not lost. I could not post pictures as I am still computerless. My hubby and I have been over to the computer shop trying to get a computer that will work for us but of no luck yet

Gone To Texas

Have you ever started a project that you really really hate? Well this is the one for me, Gone To Texas! I really don't know how many times I have put this away and brought it out again, looking at the first blocks that I did and really wanting to redo the whole darn thing but I am way to far know to start over. Today being snowed-in from the Calgary Chinooks and waiting for my dear hubby to plow me out, so again I have decided that today is the day that I am going to get this thing done! When it is done I am going to get it quilted and put it in my trunk never to be looked at again! I have picked out the backing for this and I think that is the best part of this quilt so far.

Triple Irish Chain part II

Finally the top is complete!!!  I can't believe that it is completed after 3 months of working on it.  Well now off to the quilters.  Anyone know of a quilter that I can use - around the Airdrie/Calgary area.
Top Done
I really can't believe that it actually looks like the picture in the book!!!  I am so impressed with myself.  But you know with me nothing is perfect because I am not perfect, even though I do try.  There are some squares that have a little pucker in them but I guess say la ve... (as a friend always says).
